According to The Tampa Tribune, this month is when hurricane season is at its worst, making Halloween that much more scary! Storms in the state have always occurred from June-to-November, even since 1910. The Tampa Morning Tribune of October 18th, 1910, had the headline, “Storm King Rages Along Gulf Coast,” and described the terrible damage on the island of Cuba.

The hurricane came ashore in south Florida and continued up the center of the state, passing through east Tampa. It had been a Category 3 storm at one point, but weakened as it moved over land. The city was cut off from the rest of the world, with only the U.S. mail providing connection in the aftermath. Damage to citrus crops and widespread loss of telephone, telegraph, and electric power lines were some of the many problems reported during that time.

Another October monster came just north of the Tampa Bay area in 1968. This was a Category 1 hurricane called Gladys. Although it was not as powerful as other storms, it still did extensive damage locally, with the town of Hudson particularly getting hit hard.
