Last month, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) launched its website for the registration of recreational unmanned aircraft systems (UAS)—more commonly known as drones. Here are the important takeaways:

  • Operators with drones weighing between 0.55 pounds and 55 pounds must register their craft; operators need only register once and can apply their registration number to all their drones.
  • Operators must use the FAA’s UAS registration website to register their drones.

Registration costs $5. To encourage compliance, the FAA will refund the registration cost to anyone who registers between Dec. 21, 2015, and Jan. 20, 2016.
