Eighty percent of Indiana employers have dealt with some form of prescription drug abuse, according to a survey conducted by the National Safety Council (NSC) and the Indiana Attorney General’s Prescription Drug Abuse Task Force. Those findings come in the wake of a huge spike in opioid abuse over the past decade and a half. In fact, according to the Indiana Department of health, drug poisonings have increased fivefold since 1999 and are now the leading cause of accidental death among adults.
The survey discovered a number of troubling findings:
- Only 39 percent of respondents agreed that misuse or abuse of prescription drugs is a problem.
- Only 53 percent of employers have a written policy covering employee use of prescription drugs at work.
- Despite screening for other drugs, only 52 percent of employers screen for opioids.
- More than 60 percent of employers are not confident that HR, supervisors and employees could spot warning signs of prescription drug abuse.
